Common problems with wheelchairs and their solutions as well as proper maintenance methods
Wheelchairs are means of transportation for people with mobility impairments. After purchasing a wheelchair, it is necessary to regularly maintain and inspect it to ensure the safety of the user and extend its service life.
Fault 1: Rusting
Check the surface of the wheelchair for any brown rust spots, especially on the wheels, hand wheels, frame, and small wheels. Possible causes:
1. The wheelchair is placed in a damp place;
2. The wheelchair is not maintained and cleaned regularly.
Fault 2: Unable to move in a straight line
When the wheelchair is moving freely, it does not move in a straight line. Possible causes:
1. The wheels are loose, the tires are severely worn;
2. The wheels are deformed;
3. The tires have holes or are leaking;
4. The wheel bearings are damaged or rusted.
Fault 3: Components loose
Check if the following components are tightened and functioning properly.
1. Cross brace;
2. Seat/back pad cover;
3. Side guard or armrest;
4. Footrest.
Fault 4: Incorrect adjustment of the brake
1. Use the brake to stop the wheelchair;
2. Test pushing the wheelchair on a flat surface;
3. Pay attention to whether the rear wheel moves. When the brake operates normally, the rear wheel will not rotate.
Maintenance methods for wheelchairs:
(1) Before using the wheelchair and within one month of use, check if all bolts are loose. If any are loose, tighten them immediately. Conduct a check every three months during normal use to ensure all components are in good condition. Check all the tightening nuts on the wheelchair (especially the fixing nut of the rear wheel axle) for any looseness. If found, adjust and tighten them promptly.
(2) Regularly check the flexibility of the moving and rotating mechanisms and apply lubricant. If for some reason the 24-inch wheel axle needs to be removed, ensure the nuts are tightened when reinstalling to prevent loosening.
(3) After the wheelchair is exposed to rain during use, dry it promptly. During normal use, the wheelchair should also be wiped with a soft, fine dry cloth and coated with anti-rust wax or oil to maintain its brightness and appearance for a long time.
(4) The connecting bolts of the wheelchair seat frame are loose connections. Do not tighten them.
